The Mississippi State University Ice Dawgs were founded in 2008 by an ambitious group of MSU students. The Ice Dawg’s home ice is located at The BancorpSouth Arena in Tupelo, Mississippi. Considering BancorpSouth Arena only has ice for a few months in the winter, the team travels to Pelham, Alabama for on-ice practices. In addition to those practices, the players also have off-ice practices at the Sanderson Center at Mississippi State and at Moncreif Park in Starkville. The upcoming season currently has eleven games; four at home, and seven away. The Ice Dawgs will continue their traditional “Battle of the Golden Puck” against Ole Miss on January 18 at BancorpSouth Arena. Last season, the matchup brought in over 2,900 fans.
For the upcoming 2014-2015 season, the team has several new recruits, many returning players, and is under new administration. Newly appointed General Manager, Derek Hill, said “Expect great things from the team and organization this season. The team has put in a lot of work, and they might just surprise some people this year.”
In addition to the new administration, a philanthropy position has been created for the Ice Dawgs. The team has participated in several local philanthropy events in previous seasons, however, they are hoping to be more involved in events in the Starkville and Tupelo areas this year. One of the team’s favorite philanthropy events is a softball tournament supporting St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. It is a great way to bond as a team while also helping a great cause. The Ice Dawgs are excited to see what opportunities the 2014-2015 season will bring, both on and off the ice.
