The Georgia Ice Dogs had a chance to welcome back many of its former stars on Sunday, taking on an alumni squad in a three-period thriller that culminated with the Ice Dogs rallying to win 11-9.
“It was pretty special for all of the alumni that came out,” said head coach John Hoos. “It was special to be with this group of guys who represent over twenty-eight years of Georgia hockey.”
Scoring was started early on in the contest by Michael Falkenstein, who made the initial goal of the game for the Ice Dogs in the first twenty seconds of play. The alumni team came roaring back, eventually taking a one goal lead that set up a span of back-and-forth scoring as time went on.
It looked like the alumni team was prepared to prove that their experience was too much for the Ice Dogs, but the situation shifted in the final period of play. Leading by a slim 7-6 margin at the start of the period, the alumni squad tacked on one more goal with 9:41 remaining in regulation before the Ice Dogs truly demonstrated their offensive talents.
In a matter of a few minutes, the Ice Dogs took control, tallying five goals in the span of five minutes and some change to take an 11-8 advantage. Georgia goalie Kevin Smith allowed one more goal from that point but otherwise shut down the offensive advances of the alumni to secure an exciting 11-9 victory for the Ice Dogs.
Hoos did not waste the opportunity to hit the ice again, trading his clipboard on the bench for a uniform and skates as part of the alumni team.
“We’re all part of the Ice Dogs family,” Hoos explained after the game. “The alumni wanted to show the current team that we could still play, and we did that. They popped four goals in a row at the end, but that’s alright. I think we made our point.”
Georgia will take to the ice again on Friday night at 7:30 PM as they host LSU. The Ice Dogs will then play on Saturday against Mississippi State at 7:30 PM and then cap off the weekend with a 1:30 PM matchup with the Citadel on Sunday. All three games will take place at the Athens Classic Center.
