Just five days after taking home The Davey for the second time in two years, the Vanderbilt Commodores welcomed the Ole Miss Rebels for a Friday night SECHC tilt at Ford ice Center. The Rebels brought in a 0-6 record after playing some tough teams in the annual North/South Showdown in Cincinnati.
Vandy started fast as they jumped out to a 1-0 lead just over a minute into the game with a goal from Nick Honkala. Just over three minutes later, freshman Blake Beber notched a goal to continue his impressive start to the season.
At the 15:27 mark, the Dores’ Zach Satin took a seat in the penalty box for interference. Just eight seconds later, captain John Longman joined him for a hooking penalty. Although both are valuable assets on the VU penalty kill, Vandy killed 1:27 of a 5-on-3 disadvantage.
Dan Warnecke put the Rebels on the board at 14:48 of the second period. Longman answered eleven seconds later to give Vandy the two goal advantage.
Beber and Warnecke scored their second goals of the night at 1:19 and 9:00 of the third, respectively. Senior Jack Gibbons sealed Vandy’s 5-2 victory with a goal with under three minutes to play in the third.
